GM Delivers 321 Volts to Nissan’s 87 Leafs in January

The Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf are two very different vehicles competing for a similar class of customers. So far though, the Volt is leading the Leaf in sales by a 3-to-1 margin in U.S. sales.

Nissan executives have already admitted to botching the Leaf's launch, raising expectations too high and responding to a very slow roll out. In the month of January, Nissan managed to deliver just 87 Leaf's. In the same month, GM delivered 321 Volts, three times as many Leafs. In December, GM delivered 326 Volts to Nissan’s 19 Leafs, making the grand total of 647 Volts versus just 106 Leafs.

However, if GM wants to sell or lease 25,000 Volts this year, and 120,000 Volts next year, they're going to have to severely pick up the pace and sell about seven times as many Volts every month for the next 11 months. Quite the tall order, but Nissan’s got an even bigger problem. Nissan has taken 20,000 $99 pre-orders for the Leaf and delivered just over 100 of them. How many of those people will continue to wait around for their electric car, especially with so much competition heading to showrooms so soon. In fairness though, Nissan is selling the Leaf in Europe and Japan too (the Volt sells in Europe as the Opel Ampera), and global sales figures aren’t available just yet.

It's too early to read into these sales indicators, but I'm going to anyway. Is the slow launch of the Leaf going to affect its sales going forward? Is this a sign of early Volt domination, or just an indication of GM's ability to better launch a vehicle?

Carpooling Declines 50% Since 1980

I'm lucky enough not to have a work commute, though I know many people do. What I can't explain is why carpooling has declined 50% since 1980, even as traffic gets worse and gas gets more expensive. What gives?

It seems that back in the 1970's, a decade that saw disco and destitution, high gas prices, and the exaggerated death of the American muscle car. Many companies organized carpools for their employees, and at its peak about 25% of Americans got to work via a carpool. In the last 30 years though, that number has dropped by more than half, to less than 12%, despite building more carpool lanes and commuter parking lots. It’s a national problem, coast to coast.

One cause is that as Americans got wealthier, they were buying bigger houses farther from work, making carpooling more difficult despite a wealth of social networking devices and make it easier to find people to get to work with. Carpooling dates back to World War II, when there was a gas and rubber shortage, and hit its peak during the 1970′s. Interestingly enough, minorities carpool more than whites, and in the case of Hispanics, up to 28% of the time. People just don't want to share the car, and would rather brave hours of traffic than seat next to Sarah from accounting, apparently.

How do we remedy this? I can think of only two ways; a massive overhaul of many mass transit systems, coast to coast, or an empty-seat tax. Obviously the former will have longer-lasting benefits, but the empty seat tax would be easier to implement. Charge $5 per-empty seat, and you'll start seeing a lot more carpooling. All seats full? No charge. The money collected from the tolls can go towards building the aforementioned expensive mass transit projects.

I know it sounds draconian, but just building bigger and bigger highways hasn't done anything to relieve congestion, and Americans don't seem interested in carpooling, despite the billions of dollars poured into creating HOV lanes and promoting the practice. If anybody has a better idea, I'm all ears.

OPOC Engine Is Smaller, Lighter, and 50% More Efficient Than Turbodiesels

Among conventional combustion engines, the turbodiesel is among the most powerful and fuel efficient. But a startup company called EcoMotors has developed a design that's smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient, and can run on a variety of fuels.

EcoMotors is headed by CEO Professor Peter Hofbauer, an engineer who spent over two decades at Volkswagen and helped develop vehicles like the VR6 and VW's first-ever diesel engine. Recently a former Ford performance guru, John Coletti, joined EcoMotors as President and COO. Coletti helped develop vehicles like the 10 liter BOSS Mustang concept and various other performance projects, which makes his signing-on to EcoMotors all the more eyebrow raising. Both are heavyweights in their field, and are working to bring to market an engine designed called OPOC, or opposed-piston opposed-cylinder.

The engine is a two-stroke turbocharged two-cylinder with two pistons in each cylinder. Yes, you read that right; four pistons in a two-cylinder engine. The pistons sit opposed to each other, one being pushed, the other pulled by the combustion of each stroke. What this does is allow a normal stroke to be completed twice as fast in an engine package that is just one-quarter the size of a conventional turbodiesel engine. It's also 30% lighter, and will supposedly deliver 50% better fuel economy. With an engine that small, cars could also get smaller, and thus lighter, leading to even more impressed fuel economy gains.

Sounds like a miracle motor, and I'd be quicker to dismiss it if it didn't have two very well-known and respected vehicle specialists behind it. EcoMotors just received $23 million in funding from Khosla Ventures and Bill Gates, and aims to have a vehicle on the road sometime in 2013. They think they can deliver 100 mpg in a conventional vehicle that can run on gas, diesel, or ethanol. Sounds great; the only question I have is about the horsepower and torque numbers. Making a smaller, lighter engine is great for fuel economy, but if it takes 20 seconds to get to 60 mph, it will be a hard sell.

I hope Coletti won't let that happen.

Dominican Republic Opens 1st Natural Gas Plant, Offers $700 Conversions

The Dominican Republic recently inaugurated its first natural gas plant in Boca Chica, which the government hopes will supply fuel to 143,000 vehicles over the next three years.

While one half of the island Hispaniola struggles to rebuild in the wake of last year's devastating earthquake, the Dominican Republic is moving forward with a plan to convert from LPG (propane/butane) to CNG (methane). The less-refined fuel is on average 23% cheaper than the LPG that most of the country currently runs on.

The government will issue conversion kits to the public at a cost of $700 kits, and spent $10 million to build the plant which will still use imported gas from AES Andrés, the same company that already provides the LPG for much of the country. The natural gas will be distributed to 140 stations around the small country. It's a neat little project they've got going on, especially as fuel prices continue to climb. America has huge natural gas reserves, and since it delivers the most energy with the fewest CO2 emissions per joule, and it only stays in the atmosphere for about 12 years as opposed to CO2, which hangs around for 100-150 years.

It could be a cleaner alternative to oil, but natural gas has it own drawbacks, like trapping 20 times the radiation of CO2. Maybe we should wait and see how the Dominican experiment goes first.

Ram Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Has 20 Mile EV Range

If ever a vehicle needed a hybrid version, it's the American pickup. Ram built 140 plug-in pickups with a 20 mile EV range and 65% better fuel economy for testing with fleet operators. But will it ever come to market?

Chrysler made the Ram plug-in pickup public at the DC Auto Show, where it revealed a two-mode hybrid transmission linked to a 12 kWh lithium-ion Electrovaya battery pack. This battery pack can supply up to 20 miles of all-electric driving, which is mighty impressive if you ask me. That's because trucks are better platforms for hybrids than cars are; they're higher off the ground, there is a lot more "unused" space, which means less cramming of hybrid components and a bigger battery pack. Plus, the Ram still has its 5.7 liter HEMI V8 engine, so all the extra hybrid equipment won't really cut into performance.

Supposedly, the hybrid drivetrain delivers a whooping 65% improvement to gas mileage during the average driving cycle. That would mean the Ram's 14/20 2wd rating could be more like 23/33…in a full-size pickup truck. That's a real game changer folks. But it's going to be up to Chrysler to build these trucks up to snuff. If the hybrid pickups can't handle the abuse the average owner puts his truck through, then what good is it?

If I were a small-business owner who relied on a fleet of pickup trucks, you better believe I'd be eyeing the hybrid models with better gas mileage. It might come at a price premium, but all that extra money I'd be saving on gas would mean more money in my pocket and for expanding my business. Maybe I could get back my small portion of the $48 million the Department of Energy shelled out for this hybrid project.

All Chrysler has to do is prove they're reliable in the real world, which is why they’re sending the vehicles out to fleet operators for some hands-on time.  and sell the damn things to make a mint. Chrysler has a head start in the hybrid pickup market at this point, as Ford and GM are concentrating on fuel-efficient cars, and they need to capitalize on it by selling high-MPG hybrid Ram pickups at a profit. Even if there isn’t a demand for such a vehicle right now, we all know there will be demand as gas prices keep creeping skyward.

Then, the truck with the most MPG’s, wins.

2011 Fiat 500 Falls Short of 40 MPG

While 2011 marks the return of Fiat to America, the vanguard 500 already isn't living up to the hype. The five-speed manual is rated at 30/38 MPG, while the six-speed automatic manages only a 27/34 rating.

40 MPG is the new magic number for small cars, and while the $15,500 Fiat 500 offers a lot of bang-for-your-buck in the small car department, the gas mileage isn't up to par with other offerings. The Ford Focus, Chevy Cruze Eco, and Hyundai Elantra all get 40 MPG highway with automatic transmissions and are available with six-speed manuals. So the Fiat's five-speed manual kind of falls short.

However, Fiat has beefed up the 500 in other ways to make it more suitable for American tastes. That means more horsepower (around 100) and a reworked suspension among other changes. which have added 80 pounds to the tiny Italian. And the Fiat 500 is still an adorable little coupe with a competitive price tag. Considering that over 90% of American cars are sold with an automatic these days though, the Fiat is up against some stiff competition.

These numbers are somewhat akin to the disappointment associated with the Honda CR-Z's MPG numbers. Given these lower-than-expected numbers, will you still consider the 2011 Fiat 500? Or will your eyes wander elsewhere?
