Volt Technology Will Only Work In Volt-Sized Cars

I was under the impression that GM was developing the Volt, and Voltec technology, for use in other vehicles. We saw a hint of that when GM unveiled a Volt MPV5 at the Beijing Auto Show. To be honest, I’ve had daydreams of a Voltec-powered Camaro that gets 40 mpg and does 0-60 in five seconds.

But Alan Taub, director of GM’s Research & Development, has shattered those dreams. He says that the Voltec technology that underpins the Volt won’t work in cars much larger — or smaller — than the Volt.

6,635 Nissan LEAF Reservations in Just Over Two Days

And just like that, we have proof that the upcoming Nissan LEAF will be a big seller. Today I got a quick note from Nissan spokesperson, Katherine Zachary, who wrote to tell me that as of this morning 6,635 people have plunked down the $99 refundable deposit to get in line for the first truly affordable, mass market electric car ever available… myself included.

Ford Start Minicar Concept Makes Beijing Debut

One of the biggest disappointments for me at the New York Auto Show was the utter lack of clever concept cars. There was a time when all the automakers were putting forth outrageous, impossible concepts, just because. But everybody has had to tighten their belts a few notches due to the global recession, and the concept cars have, quite frankly, gotten boring.

Leave it to Ford to debut an exciting concept… in China. Unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, Ford introduced a new concept car called the “Start,” the only aspect of this concept ever destined for production is the three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. But it is still rather pretty.
