Navistar Will Sell Electric 2-Ton Commercial Truck in Oregon First

Posted: 28 May 2010 01:05 PM PDT

Earlier this month Navistar announced it had begun production of the first Class 2c-3, 2-ton, medium-duty commercial electric truck in the U.S. — the eStar. It’s also the same vehicle that FedEx has announced it will be testing for fleet use in LA this year.

Now Navistar says that the first market the eStar will be commercially available is in “one of the nation's most environmentally sustainable cities and a leading advocate for energy-efficient transportation,” Portland, Oregon.

Nissan Plans on Selling an Inexpensive, Under 30-Minute Fast Charging Station in the U.S.

Nissan shocked everybody a bit earlier this week when they announced they had developed a DC fast charging station that had the capability of getting a Nissan LEAF’s 24 kWh battery pack from zero to 80% full in under a half hour. It wasn’t so much the fast charging capability — also known as Level 3 charging — that shocked. We’ve all known Level 3 charging was coming. No, it was the price of their charging station.

At about $17,000, it represented an astounding departure from the $60,000 to $150,000 prices that have been quoted for the better part of a year and a half for a fast charging station. I had a chance to ask Mark Perry, Nissan’s director of product planning and strategy for North America, about just how Nissan had pulled it off and what kinds of plans Nissan has for bringing their Level 3 charging station to the U.S. (more…)

Nissan LEAF Will Include Fast Charge Capability and Emergency Charging Cable at Launch

Posted: 27 May 2010 03:13 PM PDT

At the Nissan LEAF battery plant groundbreaking yesterday in Smyrna, Tennessee, I made it a goal to squeeze as much detailed information as I could out of Nissan regarding the LEAF and what kinds of equipment it will ship with.

To this point — as is usually the case in the echo chamber that is the internet these days — nobody (including myself… mea culpa) seems to have been able to get it right about two things: whether or not the LEAF will have a Level 3 fast charge receptacle when it ships and if it will be able to use a Level 1 standard 3-prong outlet.

Japanese Team Pushes Electric Car 623 Miles Without Recharging

Posted: 27 May 2010 02:30 PM PDT

Driving in a Daihatsu Mira equipped with a huge 74 kWh lithium-ion battery and a brushless DC motor, the Japan EV Club has achieved a new world record for an electric car: 1003.184 kilometers (623 miles) without recharging.

Although the team didn’t exceed 25 mph and was on a racing oval at a constant speed, the 8.4 miles traveled per kWh (mpkWh) statistic is an amazing achievement in-and-of-itself.

Second Generation Chevy Volt Could Use Diesel Or Rotary Engine

Posted: 27 May 2010 02:02 PM PDT

The Chevy Volt is still months away from hitting showrooms, but that hasn’t stopped people from speculating on the next generation of Chevy’s plug-in hybrid. Will it make the jump to a fully electric vehicle? Will they make a sportier SS version? Will anybody actually buy the Volt? These are just some of the questions people are asking.

Some of the focus has been on the range-extending engine, which as it stands is a smallish, 4 cylinder, 1.4 L Ecotec powerplant which can recharge the batteries on the fly. But will they stick with the conventional engine, or go with something… different. Like a rotary engine, or perhaps even a diesel?

Will More Efficient Trucks Lead to 120,000 More Jobs?

Posted: 27 May 2010 01:54 PM PDT

Tractor trailers use a lot of gas. The trucking industry and related professions also employ a lot of people, and are a vital link in our supply chain that gets us food, electronics… just about everything from production to the store. We need trucks, and we need truckers… but we need those trucks to be a lot more fuel efficient. Why truckers haven’t already pursued green technology to pad their profit margin, I don’t know, but a new report from Calstart might change some minds.

Called “Delivering Jobs”, the report suggests that over eight years, trucking companies could save $120,000 per truck. This money could then be used to create 120,000 jobs by 2030. But is it really that simple?

Nissan Breaks Ground on Their U.S. Electric Car Battery Plant

Posted: 26 May 2010 05:05 PM PDT

The hot, sweltering Tennessee sun baked us under a big white-top tent this morning as Nissan dedicated the future site of their $1.7 billion dollar, state-of-the art Nissan LEAF battery plant in Smyrna. Encompassing 1.3 million square feet (22 American football fields), when the plant comes online in late 2012 it will be one of the largest battery facilities in North America.

Nissan LEAF Early Adopters Won’t Get Gouged By the Dealer – Here’s Why.

Posted: 26 May 2010 04:04 PM PDT

The Nissan LEAF is the world’s first truly mass-market, affordable electric car and there are plenty of folks who’ve plunked down the $99 reservation fee with plans to be one of the first to own one when they start going on sale at the end of this year. But, from those intrepid early adopters, I constantly hear a deep-seated worry that dealers will try and squeeze some extra dollars out of them because of the incredible groundswell of demand.

Given the lack of clarity on the subject to this point, the worry is justifiable. After all, we saw it with the Prius back in the day, no? There must be something Nissan can do to stop dealer price gouging. Well, yes, yes there is.

Quirky EV is Made with Bamboo and Paper

Posted: 26 May 2010 02:58 PM PDT

So, clearly, this little car is not meant for the mass market of the United States. It resembles a traditional rickshaw, but the Meguru is an electric car made of bamboo, steel and paper. It has a range of 25 miles per charge, and a top speed of 25 mph. It’s lithium battery takes two hours to charge. The frame is made of steel, the floor is bamboo and  the fan-shaped doors are actually made of paper from wood pulp.

Estimated price for this novel form of Asian nostalgia? Less than $10,000.

Honda CR-Z: The Most Desirable Car On The Planet?

Posted: 26 May 2010 02:41 PM PDT

The Honda CR-Z is, to me at least, a bit of a confusing car. Honda absolutely nailed the sporty hatchback look, and this car can certainly pass for a contemporary cousin of the now-classic CRX. But while it looks sporty, and it even has a six-speed transmission, the engine output is, well… about the same as a 20 year old CRX. So they went and made it a hybrid. But for a hybrid, it gets sub-par gas mileage. So it kinda fails, for me at least, on both fronts, and I feel like I’m not alone on this.

Apparently though, across the Atlantic, British car reviewers are raving about the CR-Z. Did I miss something?

China Will Buy Between 15 and 17 Million Cars This Year

Posted: 26 May 2010 10:14 AM PDT

At our peak auto purchasing capacity, Americans bought an average of 17 million cars almost every year from 1997 to 2007. That means in just ten years, 170 million cars were added to the road, and far fewer were scrapped. In fact, 2009 was the first year in four decades where Americans scrapped significantly more cars than they bought. 14 million autos were sent to the scrapyard (helped in no small part by Cash for Clunkers), while Americans bought just 10 million new vehicles.

Over in China though, the auto industry is going through unprecedented growth. After outpacing U.S. sales in 2009, analysts are estimating Chinese consumers could buy between 15 and 17 million new cars in 2010. And that number is only going to grow in the years to come.

Nissan LEAF Pre-Orders Reach 13,000; LEAF “Sold Out”

Posted: 26 May 2010 09:55 AM PDT

Despite some serious efforts by nearly every major automaker to get an electric car on the roads within the next five years, EVS are still being met with a lot of skepticism. Some say the limited range will lock it into city driving, and others are say the driving public isn’t ready to jump behind the wheel of something so similar to a gas-car, and yet so different.

Don’t tell that to Nissan though. The Japanese company’s LEAF electric car has been met with thunderous applause. Now, just a little over a month after Nissan sent out the first pre-order emails, CEO Carlos Ghosn has announced that the first 3 months of LEAF supply is officially “sold out” with 13,000 $99 reservations on the books.

Report: Porsche 918 Spyder Eco-Supercar Being Readied to Race

Posted: 26 May 2010 03:50 AM PDT

The plug-in hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder was the best concept to come out of the Geneva Motor Show this year. With a claimed 0-60 time of about 3 seconds, the ability to return a fuel efficiency of 78 mpg, and a 15 mile electric-only range, it quickly became an object of lust for millions.

And now it appears the car is being readied to race in next year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours.
