Hyundai Set to Reveal New i40 Sedan in Spain

Posted: 07 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Hyundai has been on a roll lately, going from win to win on the strength of its current product, positive “buzz” over its recent “Blue” hydrogen concept cars, and the genius of its industry-leading “Hyundai Assurance” program.  Hyundai’s marketers deserve an inch of freedom, I suppose – and they are taking a mile of it, flying to Spain to reveal its 40+mpg i40 sedan (similar to America’s Sonata) to the world at the 2011 Barcelona Auto Show, which kicks off on May 12.

Hyundai claims this new i40 sedan was designed “from the ground up” by Europeans, in Europe, to meet EU market demands. "We have used very strong, fluid lines from front to rear to give i40 a distinctive appearance. We wanted to move away from the typical three-box saloon and create a car that was in keeping with the sporty nature of the i40 estate. By sculpting a low, elongated roof line, we've given the i40 saloon a striking coupe-like silhouette," commented Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor, Europe.

Expect to see official pictures of the new i40 here, once they become available.

Bristol Motors Bought by Frazer-Nash, is EV Fighter Next?

Posted: 07 May 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Last week, British “boutique” car-builder Bristol was saved from the global carpocalypse purchased by Frazer-Nash – ensuring that fans of the marque (and Bristol owners!) have good reason for optimism.

Green-car fans can find something to be happy about in this news as well:  Frazer-Nash has recently been applying its own historic name to advanced hybrid electric powertrain development in concept vehicles like the Namir EREV EV and the FN EV city car.  William Chia, the group’s Director of Operations, says that new company “will start to reveal the details of our plans to combine Bristol Cars’ tradition and marque with Frazer-Nash’s pioneering technology to showcase our cutting-edge electric and range-extended powertrains.”

It’s believed that the eagerly-awaited (among Bristol fans) follow-up to the Fighter model will make use of Frazer-Nash’s proprietary AWD system, which first saw the light of day in the Namir EREV concept.  Frazer’s expertise in the field, coupled with Bristol’s nearly magical ability to keep a car company alive despite selling fewer than 100 units per year, promises exciting new electric Bristols in the very near future.

Bristol/Frazer-Nash are expected to make their first new product announcement before the end of this year.  You can read Bristol’s full press release, below.

Kamkorp Autokraft, part of the Frazer-Nash group, has announced that it has acquired the assets and goodwill of Bristol Cars, the luxury car manufacturer, from its administrators. This acquisition will re-establish the connection between Bristol Cars and Frazer-Nash which dates back to Frazer-Nash’s close involvement in the foundation of Bristol Cars 65 years ago.

William Chia, the group’s Director of Operations, said: “Bristol Cars is a British institution and an important part of our national motoring heritage. Over the next few months we will start to reveal the details of our plans to combine Bristol Cars’ tradition and iconic marque with Frazer-Nash’s pioneering technology to showcase our cutting-edge electric and range-extended powertrains.

British engineers are globally recognised for their inventions and the quality of their innovation – and these attributes are inherent in all our systems and products. Mindful of Bristol Cars’ rich heritage and our responsibility as custodians of the brand, we are certain that our technology will blend seamlessly and successfully with the Bristol Cars tradition of engineering integrity.

Owners and enthusiasts of the cars should be assured that, even though these are early days in our tenure of the brand, we are committed to providing them and their cars with the highest levels of quality, technology and service”.
