Volkswagen’s Diesel-Hybrid L1 Concept Gets 170 MPG, Available by 2013 Posted: 14 Sep 2009 02:17 PM PDT Volkswagen will display an updated version of its 1-Liter concept this week at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The diesel-hybrid car which only weighs around 800 lbs gets an jaw-dropping 170 MPG. So who wants one? It was seven years ago when VW first announced the idea. Dr. Ferdinand Piëch–currently the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Volkswagen Group–drove a prototype of the car from Wolfsburg to Hamburg. It was the world’s first car to travel 100 kilometers on just a single liter of fuel. But the concept wasn’t ready for production as the body’s carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) was too costly for consideration. |
Colorado will offer $6,000 Tax Credit for Plug-in Hybrid Conversions Posted: 14 Sep 2009 11:01 AM PDT If you live in Colorado and own a Prius, here’s a New Year’s Day gift for you: $6,000 off a plug-in hybrid retrofit.Earlier this year, Colorado passed House Bill 1331, "Incentives for Efficient Motor Vehicles," which creates new tax credits of up to $6,000 for the purchase of, or conversion to, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Background: plug-in hybrid and electric car retrofits. The new credit will be a substantial discount off the average price of a plug-in conversion, which generally run around $10-14,000. On top of the Federal Tax Credit of 10% (up to $4,000), plug-in retrofits could start to make a lot of sense for some car owners. |

The EV I want has sold out all of it’s 2009 production in Japan. In just 60 days! After the official launch of the Japanese market for its urban electric i-MiEV in July this year, Mitsubishi now has orders for all 2,000 of the cars scheduled for production in fiscal 2009. |
Audi R8 e-Tron Electric Car Concept Revealed Posted: 14 Sep 2009 10:03 AM PDT Exciting new pictures of a hotly anticipated Audi electric car concept have been leaked, a week before the ‘official’ unveiling at the Frankfurt Motorshow. The car will apparently be called the ‘e-Tron,’ and as you can see from the pictures, will take a lot of its design cues from the R8, but with a different front grille, LED headlights, wheels and rear end. Inside, the cabin is also quite different, featuring a driver-biased center console with two screens; one for the rear view camera and one showing a navigation map (see picture gallery after the jump). |
Yokohama’s Green Tire Technology is Orange Posted: 14 Sep 2009 07:45 AM PDT Yokohama is introducing the dB Super E-spec tire, with an improved liner and a compound that uses orange oil and natural rubber to cut petroleum significantly in the manufacturing process. On the inside, an advanced inner liner is thinner, lighter, and provides better air retention. On the outside, the new Super Nano-Power Rubber compound blends natural rubber with oil squeezed from waste material from the Japanese orange juice industry to create a tire with a split personality. In straight, steady driving, the compound generates less heat, for a lower rolling resistance, while in active driving—cornering and braking—the material softens for better adhesion to the road surface. |
Germany to Launch Nationwide Hydrogen Fuel Network by 2015 Posted: 14 Sep 2009 02:43 AM PDT Germany has launched an exciting new plan to establish a national hydrogen fuel network, which could be fully operational as early as 2015. On behalf of the German government, the transport minister Wolfgang Tiefensee has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with eight industrial partners to set up the H2 mobility scheme. High profile participants include Daimler, EnBW, Linde, OMV, Shell, Total, Vattenfall and the NOW GmbH National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. Speaking about the groundbreaking plan, the first of its kind anywhere in the world, Tiefensee said, “Our aim is to continue consistent and systematic promotion of electromobility based on batteries and fuel cells. Today we can see that Germany is setting the pace when it comes to hydrogen and fuel cell technology. We are aiming at establishing the nationwide supply with hydrogen in Germany at around 2015 in order to support the serial-production of fuel cell vehicles." |
