| Hybrid on the Hill Features Diesel-Electric Hybrid Techology Posted: 15 Jun 2009 01:42 PM PDT Last week, the Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) of CALSTART hosted a “Hybrid on the Hill” day where they showcased new truck technologies. Mack Trucks, Inc. participated in the event and gave federal legislators and policymakers a first-hand look at its parallel diesel-electric hybrid technology, known as the MACK® TerraPro™ Cabover, for heavy-duty trucks. Mack is initially introducing these technology in refuse trucks, aka garbage trucks, where hybrid technology seems to have the greatest impact due to the stop-and-go nature of the trash pick-up system. |

June 8, 2009- It was pouring rain when I arrived at GM’s Testing facility in Warren, Michigan. A crowd had already gathered inside the Alternative Energy Center which, among other things, is home to GM’s first electric car—the original model EV1 (#1). The ghost of the EV1—a car designed and built 13 years ago—still haunts GM, though it’s both a symbol of lost opportunity and tangible proof that the company could pull off the same kind of engineering feat again. The billion-dollar Volt project is a major component of the company’s reinvention strategy, and it’s clear they aren’t pulling any punches this time. |
| Congress to Vote on Cash for Clunkers Program Posted: 15 Jun 2009 10:39 AM PDT
For those of you driving clunkers, you may soon be able to turn that eyesore into cash. The House and Senate have agreed to designate $1 billion for the Cash for Clunkers program to be funded out of the significantly larger $106 billion wartime spending bill. Not yet law (Congress is expected to pass this bill this week) the bill will pay people for their “clunkers”. The goal is twofold: to get fuel inefficient cars off the road and to encourage consumers to buy new, fuel efficient vehicles. A consumer who has a qualifying car will receive either a $3,500 dollar voucher or a $4,500 voucher. Your voucher credit depends on the improved gas mileage as compared to your current car. |
| Huge Electric Semi Would Transform Trucking Posted: 15 Jun 2009 07:16 AM PDT When you think about the fuel-efficient vehicles we’ll need as we descend the other side of Hubberts Peak you think of an electric car, right? You just don’t think of a hybrid diesel electric Semi Truck, do you? Well, luckily, somebody is thinking about this fuel-efficient Semi, because we will still need to transport stuff even as the oil age slowly comes to an end. Kioko Muthui has designed a humungous concept vehicle that would operate as a Series Range extended EV - a bit like the Volt - but instead of gas to run the onboard ICE, using a tiny amount of diesel. Like the series hybrid Volt, this internal combustion engine is used only to generate electricity to run the truck as an EV, never to power the vehicle. |
